FACT: sharks are not sinister but they are cold-blooded...Tyler - Divemaster / Executive ManagementJanuary 21, 2008 at 09:17:44Mike...while I agree with your assessment of sharks we should be sure to keep our facts straight. While sharks are not
sinister or machines, they are cold-blooded. Some, like the Mako and the Great White Shark are partially warm-blooded (they are endotherms). These sharks can raise their temperature to about the temperature of the water; as they need to have occasional short bursts of speed in hunting. Dolphins are social animals, well-known for their playful, carefree character.
They are considered friendly, seeming to enjoy human interaction, but they can also be aggressive and territorial when provoked. This behavior is similar to most humans when they feel their homes or personal space has been invaded. Based on fatal attacks over the past 25 years, the breeds in order of frequency are the Pit Bull, Rottweiler, German Shepherd, Husky, Malamute, and Doberman (there has not been a single reported Golden Retriever fatality in the last 25
years), with the Pit Bull accounting for over 50% of fatal attacks. Sharks are unfairly given their ugly reputation and deserve our protection, but they are the apex hunter on this planet. Millions of sharks are being massacred world-wide and sooner or later that will have an effect of the natural balance of life in the ocean, but let's not drag the Golden Retriever into the equation. |
