Sharks are fascinating animals that command respect...

Swimming with sharks is something we do because we can. Is it nearly as safe to walk through the jungles of Africa and into the heart of a Lions Den? The reality is that while Sharks are predatory meat eating creatures, we are not on their menu.

On countless occassions I have swam in the open water with these beautiful animals, Bull Sharks, Hammerheads, Sand Tigers, Carribean Reef sharks and Nurse Sharks. While all of these are on the "Top 10" Most dangerous sharks list, I have never once felt as if I were in danger. I have participated in shark feeds and found the animals to be disinterested in me at best and generally oblivious to my encroachment into their home.

Don't get me wrong, I am cautious, I have done my homework on shark behavior and I am always prepared for an unprovoked attack. Those who fear these creatures and wish to ban shark feeds due to their own ignorance could destroy our interaction and growing appreciation for these ancient animals. I say life is full of dangers, some more worrisome than others. I'd rather swim with 100 sharks than walk down the streets of any major US city after dark. The animals we need to worry about all live on land.
