Forced to stay???...

Dear Buck, It makes no sense at all to compare the fact that one of the crew left the boat with the fact that the passengers did not. The crew member was from Belize, and was familiar with hurricanes and the damage that can occur.
The dead were not familiar with hurricanes, so had to rely on the information given to them by the captain. Since he told them that all was well, why wouldn't they believe him?
He lied to them, deliberately, so that they would stay on board, and money could be kept by the Peter Hughes corporation. And that's all there is to say.
Were they forced? Might as well have been. The only information they were given was that everything would be fine, that they had ridden out hurricanes in that spot many times before, yadda, yadda, yadda.
With absolutely no way to get knowledge of the severity of the storm, they had no choice but to trust the only person who should have known better, Captain Phillip Martin. And, since most of the victims had been on another trip with another captain, one year before that, when that captain was extremely careful and conscientious, why would they think this guy would be any different? They should have been able to trust him, that was his job, not theirs.
You said horrible, disgusting things about 20 people who were killed in the prime of their lives. What's the matter with you? Have you no sense, or mercy? Sadly, apparently not.
