My OW was OK BUT I think the PADI 'Scuba Diver' course is bad...

I think my open water course was pretty good but I also think it's the absolute minimum training for a sport that involves so many risks.  So I agree with Cyber Diver that the PADI Scuba Diver course, which evidently is about half of the open water course, is a big step in the wrong direction.  Of course, I know that first and foremost PADI is a business so they want to maximize profits but "dumbing down" beginner's courses is not the right way to do it.

I just don't buy PADI's excuse that people are too stupid and too busy to make the necessary commitment, but even if many are, PADI should not pander to the "instant gratification" crowd with "instant certification" courses.
