Don't do PADI 'Scuba Diver'--do the full Open Water course...

I agree with CDNN that PADI's 'Scuba Diver' course is a very bad idea. The many accidents which occur while divers are closely supervised demonstrate that "supervision is no substitute for adequate training", a point that has been made by several others in this forum.

If you are thinking about learning to dive, start with the full Open Water course. It doesn't really matter which agency you choose but be sure to find a serious and capable instructor.  That may not be easy because selling instructor certificates is big business, and thousands and thousands of relatively inexperienced divers have 'bought' their Instructor C-Cards after doing a qucky 5-day IDC course.

My guess is that less than 10 or 20 percent of them could be described as good instructors.
