Who actually teaches PADI Scuba Diver anyway?...

Sharkfood - PADI Instructor

First off, I'm an instructor in California.  I've worked for/with at least 5 different shops and none of them offer PADI Scuba Diver. I used to live in Canada, near Toronto and worked with several shops there.  None of them offer this either.

We simply get people in Open Water courses.  Period. There is more money in it for us and better education and value-add for the student.  It seems to me the only people teaching this are the resorts who only have someone's attention for a day or two at most.  You want to help make it safer?  Make the resorts accountable and lower their ratios of DM to diver.

Also, the author states that the PADI Advanced Course is discontinued.. it was merely renamed to Adventures in Diving and continues to be one of the best courses PADI has to offer.  Properly positioned it can be a big win for the instructor and student. At our diveshop, we have close to a 70% con-ed rate, so don't believe everything in the article.
