Training by ripping someone's regulator out of their mouth...

Charles Willis - Instructor SDI & PADI/Information Specialist II
October 1, 2004 at 12:48:14

I went through PADI training in 1977 and had that done, along with other things during harrassment night, but I disagree (and by the way NEVER in my diving career have I EVER had a reg ripped out of my mouth, aside from training purposes, and that's with over 2500 dives under my belt) with the public as lawsuit happy as they are I would never even think about doing that to any of my students, with the execption of my rescue or divemaster students. I've seen instructors pull a student from 100' and bring them to around 70' and rip off their mask, and I was not only surprised, but upset that anyone would do such a fool hardy thing as that. Get students comfortable FIRST, then as they gain experience and confidence then try tricks, but not before, you'll end up scaring them to death.
