Counting divers was part of my PADI DM course...

One of the VERY IMPORTANT THINGS I learned during my divemaster training was how to keep track of divers, which means knowing at all times that everybody you're looking after is accounted for.  Counting divers underwater is a lot more difficult than it sounds in difficult conditions such as low visibility and strong currents. And that's where the arithmetic starts if you want to make sure the total is correct when everybody gets the final head count back on the boat.
