Dance of the Eagle Rays...David M - AOW / Semi-retired January 9, 2008 at 16:46:54Greetings fellow divers, This is a story I should have
reported a long time ago, because I have always wondered if anyone else had seen it. I was diving "the wall" off NorthWest point..Providenciales (Turks and Caicos Islands). I was intensely studying the wall colors at about 75 feet, when my partner tapped me on my shoulder and pointed up. Directly above us, where the wall dropped off at 55 feet, were 30 eagle rays swimming in a circle in perfect formation, one slightly offset to the one ahead of it, only inches
apart. As we ascended toward them slowly, watching their snow white bellies, they seamlessly performed a figure "8" and then moved back into a circle so smoothly you couldn`t tell which one was the leader. When we arrived next to them, only a few feet away, they serenely watched us as they circled. I can`t describe poeticly enough the moment. It is the closest I have ever been to God. They stayed in tight formation as the circle
moved out to sea. We followed as far as we dare after losing sight of the wall. I have done a couple of hundred dives and seen all kinds of outstandingly beautiful things, but this was the top. Keep diving...DM |
