Age discrimination is another common strategy to reduce dive operator costs. I know of several dive resort operators (there are probably many more) who hire only recently certified "instructors" on 2-year contracts max. With thousands and thousands of 4-day "instant instructors" popping out of the "success guaranteed" IDC factories and then desperately competing for only a handful of jobs, many of the struggling dive pro wannabes are willing to work for room and board only--"No salary, hey, no problem!"
