SCUBA DIVING :: FORUMS :: NEWS :: CORAL REEF DAMAGE

We all know scuba divers are damaging coral reefs...

We all know that scuba divers have caused significant damage to coral reefs. The only question is how much of a factor dive tourism really is compared to other human impact including pollution, sedimentation, fishing, global warming etc. I have seen terrible and increasing damage to coral reefs at popular dive destinations where local dive operators claim that global warming has been a non-factor. So I agree that dive tourism must be singled out as a primary cause of coral reef destruction.  The good news is that stressed coral reefs can recover by reducing human impact. Dive tourism, like fishing, is a controllable factor provided governments act aggressively to strictly regulate local dive operators.
