Dive industry negligence...Ken Nichols - Instructor/Dive OperatorOctober 21, 2003 at 23:41:40I must agree that the enemy is indeed us when it
comes to the destruction of our planet (marine environment). As a dive operator in Hawaii I have been deeply angered and saddened by the shameful self-induldgence/selfishness that pervades the dive industry, especially when it comes to many (not all) of the dive operators on the island in which we operate (Oahu). We as divers enjoy one of the greatest joys in diving and yet we give back not nearly as much as we take. That is the sad truth. As Jacques
Cousteau said with shocking clarity; "The oceans are dying". And yet we collectively as an industry seem largely oblivious to this reality, I guess because we are having so much fun diving those places not yet destroyed. Shame on all of us for that. At the same time I want to thank the many in the industry who genuinely care and are deeply concerned and genuinely do the best they can to protect our diminishing marine life. Let us not turn away from the
responsibility that comes with the blessing that diving provides us all. We can indeed make a difference (for the better), so let us do just that. |
