It's a nightmare even for the seedy backpackers who get on it. I've been on Ball's boats, which are not very good value. Too many divers and not enough quality diving. At the end of the day, I'm not sure why anyone would even bother with the Great Barrier Reef. Twenty or thirty years ago, yes, but now it's an ecological disaster what with hordes of tourists piling onto huge pontoon floats permanently anchored out on the reef, and that's just one part of the problem. For my money, you can't beat Papua New Guinea. The diving is a hundred times better than Australia and it's a thousand times less crowded.
