Here in Hawaii, snorkeling is definitely diving...

Don't be foolish Lucas.  During my Open Water course, Open Water Dive #3 was all about learning to dive with snorkeling equipment and without the use of compressed air.  In my Open Water manual, the performance requirements are spelled out on page 176: "After completing Open-Water Training Dive #3, you will be able to...perform a surface dive...demonstrate proper ascent and descent techniques...clear a snorkel by the displacement method..."

Open Water Dive #3 was fun and easy for me because that's the kind of diving many of us enjoy most here in Hawaii.  In Hawaii, kids practically grow up in the ocean--we start diving with mask, fins and snorkel almost as soon as we start swimming.  I swim and dive almost every day and like many divers here in Hawaii, I usually dive without the clutter of compressed air breathing equipment.

There is nothing wrong with being a BSAC Advanced "diver" Lucas, even if you are ignorant about diving.
